You Already Know how to Meditate!

I have been meditating regularly for over  two years, and I can attest to the transformative power of meditation in my life.  It has helped change my outlook and made me more conscious of decisions I make and how I react to situations.  I now realize how my decisions affect not only myself, but also others around me.

I always wanted to meditate, and had a mental image of meditation as a technique where you had to sit absolutely still in a cross legged position, your mind would automatically be serene and peaceful, and it would be effortless.  Once or twice I tried to meditate and replicate this ideal image on my own, but it was a disaster.  I could not sit still for more than a few minutes, my legs hurt, my mind was racing and all kinds of crazy ideas surfaced, and I was agitated.  I was discouraged and thought that meditation was only for monks or the chosen few!

Now I know there are many different ways to meditate.  Actually, you do not even need to learn how to meditate, you already are a meditator!  Think of a time when you saw a beautiful sunset or a view from a mountaintop, and it took your breath away for a moment and you were lost in the beauty of nature.  Perhaps you love sports and have experienced being totally in the “zone” when practicing or participating in your preferred activity.  Or maybe you have a favorite hobby and you lose track of time and everything else ceases to exist when you are absorbed in that process.  Maybe you hear a beautiful piece of music and it transports you to a different reality for a few moments.

All these events are indicators that you have experienced meditation or the “no mind” state.  So you already know how to meditate and how good this makes you feel!
