Jade Buddha Promotes Peace
ByWho wouldn’t want more peace in their mind, body, and spirit? We all want to be happy, but at the core of happiness is peace – being able to accept whatever changes and events occur in our lives – no matter what! We all know that the only constant is change, but we so often fight against unexpected or even predictable changes and don’t accept the lessons they bring. We lose our sense of peace, and therefore suffer and are not happy.
“The point of Buddhism is to just see. That’s all.” ~ Steve Hagen
There are many ways to try to bring more peace into your life, but perhaps one of the easiest is just being in the presence and looking at sacred objects. This will allow you to imbibe the powerful energies of the sacred art and can increase your state of awareness.
Recently the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace tour arrived in Mesa, Arizona. I visited the Buddha briefly during the past week with a quick stop on my way home from work one day. Later that evening I went to my Yin yoga class and at the end of my practice before savasana (corpse) pose, I pictured the Jade Buddha’s face in my mind. I totally “zoned out” (my term for accessing the no-mind state). It was really powerful and need I say – peaceful!
Today I revisited the Buddha again, since it will be leaving town tomorrow. I just happened to arrive shortly before a group of monks were chanting some special prayers. It was very beautiful and sitting there in the beautiful Arizona sunshine, listening to the sacred sounds, and looking at the serene face of the Buddha I was transported to another realm yet again.
“I want to emphasize the importance of so many people, I think it seems millions of people, who have seen the statue and have therefore have had strong imprints placed in their minds for enlightenment. … Please remember the benefits to sentient beings in what you are doing with the tour, by people even merely seeing the Jade Buddha, ultimately brings them extensive benefit.” ~ Lama Zopa Rinpoche
The Jade Buddha for Universal Peace is the biggest Buddha carved from gemstone quality jade in the world. The jade boulder it was carved from was found in Canada in 2000, and is known as the “Polar Pride”. It is a very unusual event to find such a large boulder of gemstone jade. In China nephrite jade is known as “the stone of heaven”.
The model for the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace is the Buddha inside the Mahabodhi Stupa in Bodh Gaya, India. This particular Buddha was chosen as the template because it is universally identified by all Buddhists. Not to mention that this statue is also supposed to be a direct representation of Buddha himself, since it was commissioned and carved by a contemporary of Buddha when he was still alive.
To cut a long story short, the Jade Buddha came into being after an Australian, Ian Green told his spiritual master, Lama Zopa Rinpoche about the Polar Pride that was found in Canada. The following day his master announced that the boulder would become a Buddha which would “illuminate the world.” Green was directed to take charge of transforming the gemstone into a holy object for the world. After much blood, sweat, and tears, the Jade Buddha came into existence.
“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” ~ Buddha
The purpose of the Jade Buddha is for all people, no matter their faith, to find the stillness within and reflect upon peace for themselves, their families, their communities, and the world. Why not check out the schedule of the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace tour, and visit if you can!
