Art Critique
ART PAINTING CRITIQUE
“To send light into the darkness of men’s hearts – such is the duty of the artist”. ~ Schumann
* Are you a beginning or intermediate level artist?
* Would you like some honest feedback on your work?
* Do you need some advice on drawing and painting techniques or methods?
* Do you have the necessary skills to execute your artistic vision?
* Would you like some suggestion or ideas to improve your art?
* Would you like specific guidance on how the elements of art and principles of design affect your work?
No matter what stage we are at in our artistic career, it is always good to have a second opinion about our work. Sometimes a fresh set of trained eyes can see something you might have missed, or not even considered. Sometimes it leads to a whole new direction in your work.
The 4 C’s of Art Critiques: Compassionate ~ Constructive ~ Clear ~ Communication
As a practicing artist, I personally know how unfair, misguided criticism can affect the artistic process. Therefore my goal is to conduct the session based on what I call the 4 C’s of the critique process:
Compassionate: Your art is primarily a form of self expression of your current interests and worldview, no matter what your medium or subject matter. The critique will be conducted in a relaxed, personable, professional manner taking this into account, as well as your feelings and current level of artistic development.
Constructive There is always something good about an artwork. We will start the discussion with the strengths of your piece, and then move on to areas of improvement. I will give you gentle, honest feedback on what currently works and where there is room for growth in your work. I will offer suggestions for improvements or ideas to ponder that you may not have even considered.
Clear: I will provide feedback in a clear, easy to understand manner, focusing the discussion around the elements of art and the principles of design.
Communication: Nobody knows your artwork or what you are trying to communicate in your pieces better than you. The critique process is not a case of an expert telling you what to do. Just as in a regular coaching session, it is my job to actively listen to discern what you want to accomplish with your work.
The critique is a collaboration and communication between two fellow artists, each with different strengths, weaknesses, and ideas. You are free to implement as many suggestions or ideas as you wish in your work, or completely ignore them! This is about you and your artwork, and I am not trying to impose my artistic vision on your work (I’m saving that for my own work!).
Why should you schedule a critique with me?
As well as practicing my own craft, I’ve been teaching visual art for ten years. Most of my career has been teaching teenagers at the high school level. Years of experience have taught me how to carefully choose my words to constructively critique artwork of teenage students at a critical emotional stage in their personal and artistic development. I promise that I will bring that same level of awareness and discrimination to our discussions.
Over the years my students have:
- won art competitions at the national level
- received awards and honorable mentions at student art shows at prestigious venues
- had artwork displayed at prestigious venues such as Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, The Heard Museum, the satellite Phoenix Art Museum
- participated in annual art shows at district and campus levels
- illustrated environmental information booklets for water conservation and recycling efforts
- participated in community Earth Day poster contests.
Contact me or call 480-440-1601 to schedule a critique of your work. One critique session (up to four pieces /1 hour) is $50.00!
I look forward to collaborating with you!
