While music is an art form, it also serves as a brain development tool, a creative outlet, a fresh perspective, and a way of forming connections among many different subject areas.  It’s not just an optional “enrichment” activity for kids.  Music made its way into the public schools for a reason, and without it, students would miss out on a multitude of benefits.  The following is a description of these benefits, supported by neuroscientific evidence, along with some examples of how they can be useful throughout a student’s life.  Read More→

Your habits create your destiny. Have you ever heard that one? Even if you have, read it again. Then read it again. And yea, one more time.

Then, consider this:

Your habits also create your confidence, courage and even your creativity!

Monthly Muse: Best of 2010

Greek Muse by Karapas, Dreamstime

Due to my recent “Vanishing Act” I did not recruit anyone to write a Monthly Muse article this month.   So December’s Monthly Muse will be a review of all the guest posts during the past year. This is another great opportunity to read some inspiring, informative articles by some great guest authors and bloggers.

I have selected three categories to classify the posts: Body, Mind, and Soul!  Each article will be listed under the most appropriate category although in reality many of the articles could be listed in more than one category.  This is simply due to the fact that the articles themselves are about holistic topics, not to mention they are written by holistic practitioners.  Therefore many articles touch upon aspects of body, mind, and soul.

Check out the Monthly Muse guest posts for 2010 and enjoy! Read More→

The Musical Mindset: Everyday Evocation

Musical Notes - Image in the Public Domain

Guest Post by Maria Rainier

Just as different colors can inspire certain moods, various types of music evoke feelings, memories, visions, and states of being. As humans, we’re inherently sentient, but music is a way to deepen your connection to yourself and to the world around you. Music has the power to evoke everything that is deeply human.

There are infinite ways to be creative with music, and each one can teach you something new about yourself – how you interact with the world, how sound can express your individuality, or what you can awaken in others with your music. From looking at the black and white notes on a sheet of paper, it’s almost impossible to think that anything creative could come of it. Personally, my musical training was a roadblock to my creative flow until Read More→

The Benefits of a Vegetarian Diet

Vegetables by Alexmax, Dreamstime

Guest Post by Andrew Hall

There are considerable benefits to a vegetarian diet that might not immediately come to mind when considering the decision to prioritize vegetables and quit eating meat.

As someone who was vegetarian for half a decade (I would now identify as a conscious omnivore more than strict vegetarian, but I do make vegetables the center of most of my meals), here are some things that I definitely experienced.

Jane Roberts (by way of Seth) said it years ago, “The point of power is now.”  Staying present is becoming much more difficult for most people as the pace of life seems to be increasing to a break-neck speed.  I believe I am a bit different.  I make an attempt to be aware and experience wonderment in each day that I continue to exist on earth, during this particular incarnation.

Many decisions made throughout a day are where one should focus their attention.   Read More→

Historic One Room Schoolhouse, Photo by Niamh Savani

Post by Niamh Savani

It’s that time of year:  Back to School season is upon us!  In Arizona we’ve almost completed the first month of school, and soon students in other states nationwide will be returning to the classroom.  Standardized tests and high stakes testing are now a normal feature in schools.  This creates a lot of stress for students and teachers alike.

These are not the only stresses found in schools:  as well as academic concerns, students have to deal with peer pressure, test anxiety, social expectations, balancing life and school etc. Read More→

Life After Life

Guest Post by Brandi Campbell

Why not call it life after death?  Well, because there is no death!  There is a physical being and there is a spiritual being.  Our Spiritual Beings merely reside in our physical vehicles called the “body”.  When the physical body has taken its last breath or has lost the battle with an illness, the physical slowly ends.

The Spirit however, transcends and transitions.  The Spirit takes that step into the Read More→

Dance Your Way to Joy

Belly Dancer by Bliznetsov, Dreamstime

 Guest Post by Jessica Payne

A co worker who was helping me set up for Prom last month told me, “It says something that you are still willing to dance”.  At the time I just nodded, but I don’t think I really understood what he was talking about… at least not until recently.

I have always loved to dance.  I have never participated in anything resembling ballet, jazz or even tap. But I remember as a kid dancing to TV commercials, cartoon title sequences, or turning on the radio and just moving to the music.  I would jump and twirl in my room, living room, front or back yard.  When music was on I didn’t worry about grace, coolness, or technique.  If I tripped or collided with a wall, it was all part of the dance.   I was flexible, fluid and adaptable.  I would dance until I was breathless and happy.

Hidden Pleasures

I think we all experienced something like that when we are kids. Read More→

Honor Your Mother

"A Soul Brought to Heaven" by William Adolphe Bougereau, oil on canvas, 1878.

Guest Post by Elizabeth Carman

A mother showers her children with the gift of love, compassion, sacrifice, patience, forgiveness.  She constantly gives without expectation of receiving anything in return.   Nowhere else can we find such qualities or unconditional love.  Through our mother, we have attained this priceless gift of a human body.
