Backyard Bounty
ByLast week as I was putting some items in the recycling container in the back yard, I noticed a shrub that was really overgrown. Since it’s the middle of summer in Arizona, I’ve been avoiding the garden and being outside. My husband noticed it too, so the other day early in the morning (before it was too hot!) we went into the backyard and trimmed some trees and shrubs, and worked in the garden.
As I went around the garden I discovered lots of wonderful things – beautiful peppers, bunches of grapes, tomatoes, and a pomegranate tree we planted last fall is producing the first batch of pomegranates! How exciting! Later that day I made a yummy salad for lunch using lots of the ingredients from our back yard. You can’t get better than that! Earlier in the year we had beautiful blackberries, mini pumpkins, squash, and tons of lemons. Year round we have various types of peppers, herbs, and apart from the intense heat of the summer, beautiful flowers.
I love being in the garden. It is very grounding and connects you with nature. Plus you get to use fresh, organic fruit and vegetables in your kitchen. I have to admit though, that my husband does most of the work in the garden. My method of expression is painting and writing, and the garden is his canvas.
Experiment with some backyard gardening and see how fun and rewarding it is! Get creative, connect with nature, and experience some beautiful flowers, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables right from your own backyard! This is also a great activity to do with kids!
